“Free from what? As if that mattered to Zarathustra! But your eyes should tell me brightly: free for what?”
One of humanities greatest failings is its shortsightedness. Most people can’t see beyond their own ego, much less beyond their generation, or heaven forbid even further still. What would it mean to conceive of humanity on a scale of millennia? Humanity is a species that suffers from amnesia. At best we remember 5-6 millennia, and our current civilization knows only a history of 2-3 millennia tops. If we are to improve our sight, we must also improve our collective memory, i.e. our understanding of history. But I am getting ahead of myself. In order to achieve thought on the scale of millennia we would need a set of values that demanded such a farsightedness…
Think about how humanity conceives of the future. Think about literature and popular culture’s futuristic settings. They are barely (if at all) in the future. 1984, 2005, 2018, these are (or were) our future. Deltron 3030 is the most far reaching historical setting I can think of off the top of my head. What would it mean to act with the millennial achievements and well being of humanity in mind? One thing is for sure, it would transcend all, egos, religions, political structures and corporations.
“I flew too far into the future, dread overcame me.”
